&Daughter: a love passed down through generations

The name &Daughter says it all: it's about something passed on without anyone quite noticing. Founder Buffy Reid inherited her love of knitwear from her Irish grandmother, a wonderful knitter, who passed her knowledge and passion on to Buffy's father. He began his career selling the Donegal tweeds and Arans of his birthplace and made Irish and Scottish knitwear of the highest quality his life's work.

Today Buffy works with many of the same makers and mills as her father. A story that feels familiar: LUTZ has been a family business since 1904 and believes just as strongly in craftsmanship handed down from generation to generation.

Five yarns, five makers, and they all know each other

&Daughter works with five yarns and five makers, and knows each of them personally. The yarns are 100% natural and spun in the United Kingdom and Ireland by small, independent businesses that think the way the brand does. Around 90% of the yarns used are certified by the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) or RSPCA Approved.

The wool and cashmere are spun by Todd and Duncan, on a nature reserve at Loch Leven in Scotland. The purity of the loch's water is the foundation of everything they do, from washing the raw fleece to dyeing. Their spinners deliberately select the longest fibres and wash out shorter hairs and impurities, which makes the yarn strong, lustrous and low in pilling.

Fully fashioned: knitted in Scotland and Ireland, finished by hand

&Daughter's five makers are based in the Scottish Borders and on the west coast of Donegal. They knit using the traditional fully fashioned method: each part of the jumper is knitted separately, then linked together and finished by hand.

This makes a garment extra strong. It doesn't lose its shape or tear, even after years of wear. Slow, because it can't be done any faster.

How to keep your &Daughter looking its best

Wool and cashmere are hair, and just like your own hair they are nourished and strengthened by water. The brand therefore advises washing your jumper rarely, but carefully: by hand, in lukewarm water with a gentle non-bio detergent and, if you like, a little hair conditioner for extra softness. Gently squeeze out the water without twisting, never use a spin cycle and dry it flat.

In between, airing or spot cleaning is enough. Notice small bobbles forming? Remove them with a de-bobbling machine, held just above the surface of the jumper. After once or twice, the knit will pill far less.

Does &Daughter pill?

A little pilling is normal with soft, natural fibres. &Daughter's yarn is made to pill as little as possible. Remove the first bobbles with a de-bobbling machine held above the surface, and the knit will settle over time.
